Delivered by McGraw Hill Learning Solutions Consultants, this no-cost introductory session provides the foundation for getting started. These sessions are designed to last between 1-2 hours depending on need. It includes program structure, placement testing guidance, classroom scheduling advice, and a resource overview. Schools can also gain complimentary access to on-demand training modules, recorded webinars, and assistance throughout the school year with program queries and support.
Product Guide Training can be provided for all Direct Instruction programs including Spelling Mastery, Corrective Reading, Reading Mastery and Connecting Maths Concepts.

Paid Professional Learning for Spelling Mastery
McGraw Hill provides a tiered Professional Learning (PL) pathway for Spelling Mastery. All PL packages provide a clear and comprehensive overview of the program and key delivery techniques. Across all workshop types, teachers receive practical guidance and opportunities to apply what they learn, helping them build confidence and consistency in their implementation.
Each package is designed to support teachers to deliver Spelling Mastery with fidelity and skill, ensuring strong foundations for student success. All training is delivered by experienced classroom teachers of the program and educators with deep expertise in Direct Instruction delivery.
Delivered by practitioners in Australia or New Zealand, paid Professional Learning is conducted by NIFDI-qualified trainers with classroom experience using Direct Instruction programs. All partner trainers meet McGraw Hill’s professional learning standards and have a minimum of two years’ experience delivering Direct Instruction. These facilitators ensure schools are trained to implement Spelling Mastery with fidelity and success.
Options 1 and Option 2 (Comprehensive Package and Refresher Package) are designed to be delivered onsite, either at your school or at a designated training location located as close as possible to your school. However, parts of the training such as scheduled check-ins can be delivered remotely if preferred. Option 3 (Online Training) is designed to be delivered online for schools in remote locations. This is to accommodate teachers who cannot easily travel to a training destination or where costs are prohibitive for physical training.

General Direct Instruction Training
The National Institute for Direct Instruction (NIFDI) offers a very good introduction to DI Video series. This series is easy to access and free of charge. We recommend this course for all teachers who are new to DI. The topics covered include:

Good to Great Schools Australia (GGSA) has partnered with McGraw Hill to give greater support to educators delivering Direct Instruction programs.
GGSA’s Spelling Mastery professional learning module supports teachers and teaching assistants delivering Spelling Mastery Signature Edition. This offer is open to all existing and new customers of McGraw Hill who are using the Spelling Mastery program.
Educators simply log on to GGSA’s professional learning platform, the Effective Teaching Portal, to access the comprehensive 12-lesson module.

Claire Scott, M.Ed., M. Psych.
Claire Scott, M.Ed., M. Psych., has been providing Direct Instruction [DI] training and coaching for twenty years, and has conducted hundreds of workshops and training in a wide variety of settings. Her work is underpinned by extensive classroom experience and Masters degrees in Psychology (Educational and Developmental) from RMIT and Education from the University of Oregon. Claire has worked with the University of Oregon and Center for Applied Research in Education (CARE) teams in Oregon, California and American Samoa training pre- and in-service teachers and training coaches in effective teaching strategies for DI reading, writing, language, spelling, comprehension and maths. Claire’s additional experience extends to Senior Training with CARE in American Samoa for six years and Implementation Management with Good to Great Schools Australia in Cape York for three years.

Toni has been described as Australia’s Anita Archer! She is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished teachers in the world. In 2016 she received the prestigious National Institute for Direct Instruction (USA) Educator of the Year award.

Jessica Colleu Terradas, M.Ed., M.Sc.Res.
Jessica is a literacy and instructional coach in the Literacy Guarantee Unit in the South Australian Education Department, advising and supporting teachers and leaders in implementing high quality evidence-based reading instruction across rural, regional, and metropolitan schools (primary and secondary schools). Prior to this role, she spent 7 years supporting students at educational risk through high impact instruction at Como Secondary College (Western Australia), using Direct Instruction programs. In 2019, she was awarded a Commonwealth Bank Teaching Award in recognition of her success in improving literacy and numeracy outcomes in struggling adolescents. As a special education and expert teacher, Jessica has been instrumental in advancing the awareness, understanding and use of evidence‐based instruction to prevent low numeracy and literacy failures across the state and beyond. Caitlin is a literacy consultant, school leader, and NIFDI‐qualified Direct Instruction trainer, with over 20 years of experience in education. She has delivered teacher training, in‐class coaching, and implementation support across the full range of DI programs, including Reading Mastery, Corrective Reading, Spelling Mastery, Spelling Through Morphographs, and Connecting Math Concepts.
Caitlin has worked with schools across Australia to embed high‐impact, evidence‐based literacy and numeracy instruction. Drawing on her leadership background as a school leader, she supports schools to implement DI with fidelity through initial training, demonstration lessons, data analysis, and ongoing coaching.
