Carpentry Skills for Certificate III, 2e: Unique to the new edition
Launching on 3rd November, it’s time to get excited about the new edition of Carpentry Skills for Certificate III by Bonnici, Ford and Hick. Numerous characteristics of the new resource set it apart from the rest, especially given that all the core units are covered in the one publication along with the major electives. Carpentry Skills for Certificate III, 2e is being released in conjunction with the new training package. Here is what you need to know:
1. One volume, written to all core Units of Competency (UOC) for the new CIII Carpentry CPC30220 qualification
- UOC content is covered within the one volume, with each chapter having major links to individual units of competency
- This one volume can be used to cover content in Certificate I in Construction, Certificate II in Construction Pathways, and Certificate II in Construction, including the Victorian Certificate II in Building and Construction.
2. Because it is written to the new CPC30220, there are two brand-new chapters to address the two new units in the qualification, they are:
- Chapter 2 - Construction work hazards and risk control strategies
- Chapter 16 - Construction calculations in carpentry work
And an auxiliary chapter, Chapter 35 – Plan and organise work.
3. Available in print and eBook formats
4. Includes a comprehensive Instructor Resource Manual
Two chapters you won’t find anywhere else
Chapter 2 Construction work hazards and risk control strategies (CPCWHS3001) & Chapter 16 Construction calculations in carpentry work (CPCCOM3001)
In Chapter 2, students learn about both the Safe work method statement (SWMS) and Job safety analysis (JSA) and how to prepare and implement each. The authors discuss how students can break down construction tasks into manageable steps, to allow them to “identify, assess and manage the hazards and risks associated with each step, in relation to the job environment” (Bonnici, pg. 43). By the end of the Chapter students will learn how to provide a well-managed and safe workplace for all workers.

Chapter 16 equips students with the skills and knowledge to plan and perform the types of calculations they will need to do on the job to determine everything from the amount of materials required, to working out costings and the most economical layout. Rich with detailed drawings of house plans, formulas and equations with worked examples, examples of costing sheets, plus examples of internal and external materials and standard sizes, this chapter will help students understand the relationship between calculations and materials, and how to maximise profits and reduce construction industry waste.
